Just beyond the outermost western suburb of Reading, Tilehurst, lies the area known as Sulham Woods. Initially on level, high ground, the woods slope down westwards towards the valley of Sulham Brook and the River Pang, which flow side-by-side from south to north. There are in fact many woods and copses, some on high ground, some on the slopes and some in the valley. The woods are interspersed with fields, many cultivated, and open grassy stretches of countryside. The whole area is criss-crossed with footpaths and only one minor road, from Tidmarsh in the valley, up through Sulham towards Tilehurst, passes through.

This shorter walk stays mainly on the higher ground. There are swing-gates at the start and finish and one stile (which can be bypassed). There are no very steep hills and the going is quite easy, but of course can be muddy in bad weather.
