In Sunart the ancient woodlands are among the last remnants of the extensive temperate rainforests that once grew along the Atlantic coast of Europe. In the First World War they were planted with Sitka spruce and larch, now being replaced.
The walk is called Lochan na Dunaich. The route travels through the oak-woods parallel to the loch with posts labelled with tree names to aid identification. It has particularly beautiful plants growing around the tree bases and it is fun for children to seek out the posts with tree labels. There are a further walks walks west of Salen.
