This walk is part of the Sunart Oak-Woods. The ancient woodlands are among the last remnants of the extensive temperate rainforests that once grew along the Atlantic coast of Europe. In the First World War they were planted with Sitka spruce and larch, now being replaced. The path leads down the hill, twisting in and out among the trees to the bay, which is a natural harbour. It was used by the Vikings to overwinter their boats. For centuries the bay was used to export charcoal, oak bark, birch and bark bobbins etc.
