Although categorized as a medium grade walk purely on length, this easy to follow walk is really quite undemanding as the vast majority of the route involves walking on either lanes, quiet roads or railway paths with no ascents or descents of any note. All-in-all a very pleasant ramble to be enjoyed at any time of the year.
The walk starts from the medieval Sunderland Bridge near Croxdale, from where wide track- and lane-walking passes through the hamlet of Holywell before intersecting the Brandon - Bishop Auckland Railway Path on the outskirts of Brandon Village. A ramble along the delightful railway path takes you past Brancepeth Village almost to the outskirts of Willington, where the route leaves the railway path to pass an inviting farm shop and tea room and at roughly the halfway point of the walk is an ideal place to take a break. Farm tracks then take the walker on a very gradual descent to intersect the River Wear at the former mining village of Page Bank. The final leg of the walk is mainly following the riverside path back to the old Sunderland Bridge.
