For those walking the Cleveland Way, this walk constitutes the final section. You park in Helmsley and at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre, but the walk begins at the visitor centre. From here, the views over the Vale of York to the Yorkshire Dales beyond, are stunning. Optionally, you can visit the Kilburn White Horse (a massive chalk horse figure carved into the steep hillside), before returning to the Cleveland Way proper. The Cleveland Way now takes us over fields and pasture to the little village of Cold Kirby, where you can rest your weary feet on the green.
From Cold Kirby, we soon drop into Rye Dale, a lovely wooded valley that we follow as far as Rievaulx Abbey (another interesting diversion, if time allows). Now we climb gradually through woodland to overlook Rye Dale, before finishing our walk in the market square in Helmsley.
Dog-walkers, please note the presence of the occasional dog-unfriendly stile and the possibility of livestock en route.
