Sutton Bank - Lake Gormire - Boltby - Cleveland Way - Sutton Bank
This is a dog-friendly walk with few stiles. Look out for a large erratic boulder on your way down to Gormire Lake, which is home to swans and other wildfowl. We head north to the village of Boltby with its ancient pack-horse bridge before returning up the hill on a slanting path to the escarpment on The Hambleton Hills which carries the Cleveland Way. There are usually gliders and parascenders circling overhead from the nearby Sutton Bank Gliding Club. The mountains of the Yorkshire Dales can be seen on most days, with Great Whernside at over 2,300 feet high and 34 miles distant, clearly visible.
The nearby Hambleton Inn on the A170, 1km in the Helmsley direction, serves food and drinks and is generally open all day except in the winter. For a meal or a tasty snack, the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre has an excellent cafe and shop display area. The toilets are outside the cafe and adjacent to the car park and bus stop.
For a long, challenging walk of around 17 miles, try linking this walk with Walk 5927, which also starts from the Sutton Bank visitor centre.
