Tees Barrage - Stockton-on-Tees - Preston Park - Eaglecliffe - Yarm

This interesting, almost totally flat, linear walk along a section of the Teesdale Way starts from the Tees Barrage at the point where the river becomes tidal. The first 1.8 miles of the route follows the river upstream as it initially passes through the urban sprawl of Stockton-on-Tees before emerging into open country, where the riverside path snakes through the flat countryside, passing through a couple of marshy nature reserves complete with wildlife ponds. The walk passes through the grounds of Preston Park Museum, followed by a section where the route unavoidably moves away from the river to circumnavigate Eaglecliffe Golf Course before once again joining the river. From here the path closely follows the river, finally to arrive at the charming old-world town of Yarm, from where you catch the bus back.

Catch the Arriva No 7 to Stockton High Street from opposite the old Town Hall in Yarm High Street. At Stockton High Street take the Arriva No X1 from stand No 31 opposite the Shambles Market Hall. Get off the bus near to the Tees Barrage, walk up to the roundabout and bear immediately left down the surfaced footpath to cross the barrage and arrive back at the start of the walk. Alternatively, from Stockton you can walk back to the barrage along the river, retracing the route you walked at the start of the walk. The distance from Stockton High Street to the barrage is 1.3 miles.
