Tentsmuir was once a marshy heath; it is now an environment managed by both the Forestry Commission and Scottish National Heritage. it's an area of trees but also of dunes, pools, sandbanks, rare plants, birds and animals. Hidden amongst the shifting sands are reminders of Britain's military past with numerous WW2 fortifications. The walk is one of the best beach walks in the country, a mix of dense woodland, open sands, wide open horizons and a wide variety of wildlife.

Up to point 8 was superb although we had some difficulty at the start finding the waymarkers. I think we should have followed the signs for the Ice House trail. Instead, I think we followed the cycle trail but it was beautiful. Section 8 - 12 heading south through the woods was really boring, just a hard slog of almost 4k down an interminable woodland perspective. Any time we stopped we were attacked by biting, blood-sucking insects (this was end of July) - big mosquito like flies and black clegg-like creatures. We've still got the bites 3 days later so cover up. No walking in shorts! I suggest walking out on the Ice House trail and then back on the Cycle trail or just back the way you went out - the views along the coast are stunning.
