This circular walk takes you up and around a wonderful fell that is largely ignored as you pass by to the larger fells and hills in the Coniston area. The fell is not high and the path is far from steep, but gently meanders and climbs through the fell on distinctive paths. The first point of interest is Beacon Tarn. The route takes you around the tarn. Seeing that the yarn is only a short distance from the road, it has a desolate appearance. From the Tarn it's a short walk up to the Beacon. This is a fabulous viewpoint, giving 360-degree views. From here a near full view of Coniston Water is obtained and excellent views of the Old Man range. The rough-shaped fell top has small hollows and dips which are ideal to sit and soak up the sun. The path reaches a small lane which leads you back to your car.

The start of the walk, off the main road, is very overgrown and difficult to spot even walking along the road. Similarly the initial section up to the telegraph pole is very overgrown with bracken and brambles. Long trousers recommended. The tarn is beautiful and the walk up to the Beacon is well worth it for the wonderful view. Very busy road to walk along with very narrow verges so take great care as traffic can be very close to you. Great walk.

A lovely walk for an afternoon but a word of warning. Once you are up on the fell this walk feels quite remote. Make sure you follow the directions carefully as if you wandered off you could find yourself miles from anywhere. Make sure you take a rucksack and wet weather clothing as the weather changed in a moments notice when we walked this in August 2008. At waypoint 7 when descending be careful as it is easy to go wrong and end up in boggy ground but once you find the tarmac road you will be okay. Great views, great directions and well written. 9/10.
