The Circuit of Alton Water

There are a number of car parks around the route, including one at the Visitor Centre in Stutton. You can have a meal here and there is also a Water Sports Centre. It is also possible to hire a bike to make the circuit of the lake. Many families make this a Sunday outing as the route does not use any public roads, except for a brief and quiet stretch on a bridge across the lake at Tattingstone. On the route you will see what appears to be a church, but it is a house with a tower attached, known as Tattingstone Wonder. You will also have views of the impressive buildings of the Royal Hospital School at Holbrook. The lake itself is man-made and the water is pumped up to it from the River Gipping. The valley of this river too offers some pleasant walking, which we hope to make available in due course through Walkingworld.

Perfect easy winter walk. Nice to take instructions but basically follows the lake and is well signed. If you use the free parking as suggested then cafe comes around 6k. Cafe only open weekends in winter but toilets were still open. Still used picnic tables on a lovely winter sunny day.

This is an easy and very beautiful walk. I loved it. Walked and updates entered September 2009. Adrian (Admin)
