Beginning ten miles south-west of Inverness at the Clansman Hotel, on the west shore of Loch Ness, this circular walk on good paths takes you up through hazel and birch woods to several viewpoints overlooking the loch. It's a good stop to have refreshments and a walk when motoring along Loch Ness.
This ancient right of way, including the old corpse road followed by corteges from the upper crofting settlements down to the graveyard at the loch shore, has been improved by the Woodland Trust and is now a delightful family walk (with dog).
All the paths are good and well-graded. The early part of the walk is through hazel and birch woods, the hazels, in days gone by, being cut annually for rods to make creels and barrels, sold to the fishermen passing through Loch Ness on their way to the herring fishing in the west. The other local industry, apart from the crofting, was distilling home-made whisky. Note the cruck frame at Waymark 12; such frames were used to support the roofs of crofts. There are some very nice views across Loch Ness.
