The walk starts in the old centre of Ayr with some interesting buildings and old bridges. The banks of the river are full of wildflowers, with some woodland areas. After the A77 crossing, the walk follows country roads close to the river, passes smallholdings and nurseries, eventually to reach Auchencruive Estate. It is the start of the much longer River Ayr Way, a distance of 44 miles which follows the river from sea to source, beginning at the wide mouth and following countryside and woodland to reach Glenbuck Loch. The walk can be divided into various lengths. Public transport can be found at many of the villages to help break up the distances.
