There are over thirty extinct volcanoes in this part of Catalonia, a large number in and around the town of Olot. This hike is Itinerary Number 1 in the Volcanic Natural Park Garrotxa. It is well-signed for most of the way. We shall begin with a ramble through beech forests that have thrived on the undulating lava flow. We will also stand in the crater of Santa Margarida as well as get an insight into the composition of volcanic eruption through a man-made cutting in the side of the Croscat Volcano (Strombolian type) in an attempt to extract minerals. Along the way we shall have breathtaking scenery as well as a couple of fairly stiff climbs.
