This is the Picos de Europa PR route PNPE 20 and is very well-signed throughout using the usual white and yellow bar marks. We begin in the charming little hamlet of Tielve, walking up the tarmac road that we arrived on, in the direction of Sotres. After about 1.8 kilometres we leave the road and begin a long ascent of a rocky footpath, gradually leaving the road further below us. There are one or two rock-falls to negotiate but the route is straightforward and the scenery stark and majestic. At last we crest the ridge to find the little town of Sotres below us and we walk down to enjoy a break at one of its many welcoming hostelries. From here we continue northwards, briefly passing through open pastures and beech woods before starting our ascent once more to reach the little road at the foothills of La Caballar (1230m).

Crossing the road we now enter completely different country with open pastureland, cattle, beech woods and little mountain streams – very different topography from valley we walked up from Tielve. Now we begin a meandering trail generally downwards, passing by many invernales (animal winter shelters). At length we reach the large cattle-farming settlement at Majada de Valfrio and follow a short but steep footpath that brings us back to Tielve.
