An easy to follow route around the Wear Valley in this varied mid-County Durham walk. The route starts and ends at a delightful pub and is mainly flat with a couple of gentle ascents and includes lanes, woods, fields and a bare minimum of road-walking. The route also visits two of the area's quietest, picturesque villages.
The walk starts from Tudhoe Village and heads north-west to intersect the River Wear. Pleasant riverside walking takes the walker to the old Sunderland Bridge, where the route picks up the tree-lined drive to Croxdale Hall. The route then passes through the glorious Croxdale Wood before very pleasant lane-walking along the edge of Butterby Wood. More lane-walking then delivers the walker to Hett Mill, where the route crosses the main East Coast railway line. From here field-walking takes you to Hett Village, that boasts one of the widest village greens in the county together with a charming duck-pond. The final section of the route is all fieldwork as the walk crosses two roads before returning to Tudhoe Village.
