The walk is accessible by London Underground, its highlight being Upminster Windmill, the South's best-preserved smock mill, built in 1803 (free admission and free guided tours approximately two weekends a month from April to October; see www.upminsterwindmill.co.uk).
Other features are more historic buildings, churches, ancient chapel, shops and two children's play areas. There are benches in the parks, eateries and pubs serving food en route. The walk is good for wheelchairs and prams as it is almost all on tarmac pavement or paths.
