This walk is a series of delightful surprises. Green lanes, field edges, woodland paths, country lanes, church graveyard, village streets, open fields and panoramic views.
The walk starts and ends in the Nottinghamshire village of Upton; except for the village part, the walk is entirely in the countryside - open fields, green lanes, narrow enclosed paths. The walk reaches, but does not enter, the racehorse training facility of Averham Park. The views, especially over the Vale of Belvoir, are exceptional.
Upton Hall is currently the home of the British Horological Institute. If you manage to coincide your visit with one of their frequent open days I recommend a visit. The timepieces there are absolutely fascinating. If you can remember a time when telephones had dials and you could dial 'TIM' and listen to the speaking clock, you will enjoy standing next to the original mechanism and listen to her telling you what the time will be "at the third stroke". There is a cafe there: it serves very good food in a Victorian setting; highly recommended.
The village pub (my chosen starting point) also serves very good food in a traditional old pub setting. The landlord has a reputation for keeping 'a good pint'; he has an interest in a micro-brewery, The Mallard Brewery, and serves "quacking good ales" (his pun not mine). The Mallard Brewery is located in the nearby hamlet of Maythorne.
