This walk crosses the chain de puys (volcanoes). You will walk through the crater and round the rim of various volcanoes, seeing them both from a distance and close up. The walk is largely through a forested area (over 50%), making it a good option if you must do a walk on a wet day (as I did!), as the trees provide a substantial amount of shelter from the worst of the rain.
From Volvic (where the dark stone is quarried from which much of Clermont-Ferrand was built) you will climb and descend many volcanoes, which by their nature tend to result in steep paths (although there is some flatter walking as well). Overall you will descend, as the train has carried you uphill to Volvic. The views open up, suddenly at times when you come out of the forest and you get views over to the Puy-de-Dome and over the Clermont Ferrand region.
Once you leave the train station in Clermont Ferrand there are no more opportunities for food or drink until you reach Durtol, so you need to carry with you everything you need.
