Wadesmill - Thundridge - High Cross - The Bourne - Wadesmill
To visit two of the churches you will need to make short there-and-back-again departures from the circular route. To visit the new church in Thundridge, do not immediately take the signposted footpath off left at the start of Waymark 2, but first continue ahead, uphill on a path which leads directly to the church. The view from its eminent location warrants the extra effort. You will pass the old church, without need of a detour. It was formerly possible to take a direct route on a field-path to the church at High Cross, but the construction of the new dual carriageway for the A10 extinguished an essential short stretch. To visit the church now you will need to turn right when you reach the main road in High Cross at Waymark 5. This will give you the opportunity to see the grave of Colonel Arthur Martin-Leake. A member of the army's medical corps, he was awarded the Victoria Cross twice. The first act of bravery was during the Boer War and the second in World War 1. He was the first person to achieve this honour. During World War 2 he assumed responsibility for ARP precautions in this area. His former home is the superb Victorian house Marshalls, which you pass on the walk.
