George Orwell lived in a cottage on the lane where this walk begins during one of the most productive periods of his writing career. He was married to Eileen O'Shaughnessy in the church you pass towards the end of the walk and the great barn you pass soon after is said to have been the inspiration for the one in Animal Farm. The superb views in all directions from the ancient Icknield Way are another major attraction of this walk, as is the tiny, out-of-the-way village of Clothall.
