There is a stream which has to be forded, so it is recommended that this walk is only done in wellingtons or walking-boots. The walk starts in the centre of Walsden, which has easy access for both driving and public transport.
The start of the walk is a climb of about 1.5 kilometres before dropping down into Ramsden Clough. You cross an old bridge before climbing out of the clough to reach the Long Causeway, an old pack-horse route between Rochdale and Todmorden. After a short distance you leave the causeway and continue along the Todmorden Centenary Way to pass Cranberry Dam before passing through the nature reserve area of White Slack. From White Slack you pass Lower and Higher Allescholes Farms to reach a junction with the Rochdale Way. You drop down to the Rochdale Canal, passing several air shafts for the summit tunnel on the railway line following part of the Pennine Bridleway. The final section follows the towpath back to the start point.
The walk uses rural roads, farm tracks, green lanes, canal towpath, footpaths and part of an old pack-horse route. There are a number of listed buildings and structures on this walk. See additional information for more details.
