Walton Bridge - Lower Halliford - Old Shepperton - Desborough Island

This easy, level walk explores part of the Thames meanders where a lucky combination of bridges and ferry allow something very unusual – a walk by the Thames that visits both banks. There is much of interest on the way as the route explores the pretty villages of Lower Halliford and Old Shepperton. The walk first crosses the river at Walton Bridge, where Julius Caesar is said to have forded the waters. It crosses back to the Surrey bank using a foot ferry near Shepperton Lock. The ferry runs from 8am on weekdays, 9am on Saturdays and 10am on Sundays, every 15 minutes, until 5.30pm (call 01932-254844 to check). The route then explores Desborough Island, created when the Desborough Cut was dug to improve navigation by bypassing the meanders in the river that this walk visits.
