The whole of this route is in the Sankey Valley Park along the St Helens Canal; this section near Warrington town centre includes woods and landscaped parkland and is very popular and busy. There are no roads, and you will pass through woods or alongside trees for the whole of the walk. There are numerous paths, so expect plenty of waymarks to keep you on the route.
All of the paths are good, several being hard surfaced, and all are generally flat. There are no stiles; just one deep kissing gate, and a few 'radar' padlocked gates and some snickets for other walkers. There are some wild animals, especially squirrels, in the woods. You will need to negotiate some very short steep slopes and a couple of flights of long shallow steps. You will pass a small children's play area on your return route, and after you finish the walk the children's Gulliver's Theme Park is very close.
The walk is suitable for all the family, excellent for dogs, good for buggies and possible for the adventurous wheelchair user who can cope with some grass paths, some narrow sections and some very uneven and bumpy sections. Wheelchair users will need assistance with navigating these, and with the short steep slopes. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts.
There are no refreshments or toilets on the route except at the The Maltings pub at the start and finish. However, there are numerous bench seats and picnic tables along most of the walk. If you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with a drink at the pub; an excellent finish to a good walk. Note that the pub car park is for customers only.
