From the start point the route follows several roads slightly uphill to reach a footpath near a college. The route continues across the hillside through woodland sections, a variety of short road sections, footpaths across fields to reach the highest point. This section involves a total climb of approx eighty-six metres over approx 3.5 kilometres.

From the highest point the route drops down to the river using passages between houses and a road. This involves a drop of fifty one metres crossing three roads. The last one is the main road between Bacup and Rawtenstall via Waterfoot. After crossing the river there is a climb up to a local viewpoint before the final drop back to the river.

The final section follows a cycle route alongside both banks of the river and through two disused railway tunnels to reach the start point. You cross a number of streams mainly via footbridges which are all tributaries of the river. The walk is a mixture of environments. Street names added for clarity.

Goes east along the north side of the Irwell Valley then west along the southern side with expansive views. Lovely! But with 45 turn-by-turn instructions to follow you need to be on your toes. Some little-used paths were overgrown but visible. At Waypoint 17 we couldn't see Prospect Terrace and therefore walked on and missed the turning! Choose a clear day.
