Waterfoot - Rawtenstall - Waterfoot

From the start point the route follows several roads and a footpath (uphill) to reach the area of Newchurch. After a short section along a main road the route climbs to reach a footpath across a field and through trees to reach a road and a farm access road. There is then a short climb and a path up and across the hillside to reach some woodland. After passing the edge of the woods there is a short section through the woods before the route drops down towards Rawtenstall using roads and footpaths. There is then a section using roads and a footpath to reach the River Irwell. The route continues alongside the River Irwell using a mixture of roads and footpaths before passing through a factory to reach a main road. This is followed for a short distance back to the start point crossing the river twice. The walk is a mixture of environments. Street names added for clarity. Because of the variety of environments the general picture shows part of the view from the road between WM17 and WM18.
