This walk can be split into three sections as follows:
Section 1) It starts at the car park for Watergrove Reservoir. It walks below and alongside the embankment before passing through the centre of Wardle. A series of rural lanes are walked along to reach an area of Littleborough called Shore (no way near the sea, about eighty kilometres, fifty miles away).
Section 2) It climbs on a well-used rural road and a bridleway up to the heights above Rochdale to reach the Mary Towneley Loop of the Pennine Bridleway (PBW) and the Rochdale Way. The PBW is followed across the moor before dropping down to Watergrove Reservoir through a 'Life for a Life' Memorial Forest.
Section 3) The walk continues along the PBW, climbing back towards the moors. The PBW is followed into a local nature reserve before leaving the PBW. There then follows a section alongside Watergrove Reservoir to reach the embankment and the car park at the start point.
There are excellent views across the reservoir towards Manchester and also views of Yorkshire. On a clear day looking further afield, you may be able to see hills in Clwyd and Snowdonia as well as parts of the Peak District and Cheshire.
The area around the reservoir is very popular with dog-walkers and families having a day out.
Street names have been added for clarity if using GPS.
