Wells - Bishop's Palace - Beryl Wood - Pen Hill - Mill Lodge Garden - Wells

I don't know if it is just that I catch this walk on a bright day, but the combination of dappled light and spring flowers always makes the two-mile stretch through woodland extremely pleasant for me. I've done it early spring (spurge, anemones) or later spring (garlic, bluebells) and it is always a pleasant experience wandering by the stream. I've also done it the opposite way round to the one described and it is equally pleasant.

Add to that Wells Cathedral and Bishop's Palace and a bonus garden and you have a full day out, maybe more, with a couple of refuelling stops. You also have a stretch with excellent views over the Somerset Levels.

Re-walked in May 2022. The car park at Waitrose has a top level which is for long stay parking, and allows you to stay for many hours, and certainly more than the three stated (which applies to the ground floor level).

As Whiting Way Car Park is only a maximum of 3 hours for parking, I would start at Tucker Street Car Park. Walk towards the main road you came in on on Tucker Street and then turn right, walk up Tucker Street and St Cuthburts Street and then you end up at WP2 which is by the high street next to the church.

Just to say, they are building a Waitrose at the car park at the start. The car park is still there, but has beome 2 storey. I assume it will remain available to non- Waitrose shoppers.

We did this walk on a warm June day and thoroughly enjoyed it. It had been very wet the previous days and was fairly boggy in places through the woods. Good easy to follow instructions, and some fantastic views.
