Please note Keith Lomas' comment on this walk, October 2006.

This walk highlights the contrast between the old Pennine Way leading from Black Hill to Black Moss Reservoir and the new Pennine Way. It begins at the A635 and takes the new Pennine Way up to the trig point at the top of Black Hill. Then the path follows the old Pennine Way down to Black Moss Reservoir. Much of this part is over trackless peat moor; map, compass and navigation skills are essential. After this, however, the return follows the new Pennine Way - easy walking and easy to follow. At the risk of upsetting those who have hiked the PW, it does bring home how much easier the walk is today, compared to when it was first opened.

The dog-leg through the gorge past waypoint 13 is temporarily closed,as subsidence/erosion have made the footpath dangerous. There is a sigposted diversion from grid 05240-08852 which goes down and up the valley sides to meet the track which passes waypoint 15. This path is VERY steep and muddy when wet.
