This is a walk along a peaceful canal, converted railway track and through country parks that were once part of this area's industrial heartland. Very little of its history can be seen now as all the sites have been transformed into public recreational areas. Start by following the route of the old North Staffordshire Loop Line through two country parks that were once a hive of industrial activity and end on a section of the Trent & Mersey Canal, once one of the busiest in the country. This is an almost flat walk that can be enjoyed by all.

Lovely industrial/ open space walking. Due to some houses that had been knocked down we headed up the wrong road at point 4, but it was easy to correct to get back on track for point 6; in fact the walk detour took us past the Sacred Heart Church, it would have been nice to have looked inside but sadly it was closed. Sadly we didn't see any remains of the Goldenhill and Newchapel Station, the undergrowth was dense. The Potteries Loop Line is a really good dog friendly walking area and we met lots of friendly dogs and their owners along this section. We'd looked forward to perhaps seeing a boat either going into or out of the Harecastle Tunnel but it would have been a long wait! There is a good picnic bench here to sit and relax at and so would have been nice to have seen some boat activity. The Canal and River Trust staff member said it had been quiet. Overall a relaxing ramble on a warm sunny day in May!

Completed this walk today .6/1/18 Again well directed Even though it must have been a nightmare trying to write down the directions with all the many paths going everywhere .Tunstall area was a mess with litter thrown everywhere. Up the embankments etc. .But after that section .Bliss .Lovely flat dry walking . Enjoyed it very much . William.

What a fantastic walk, did this walk today having been looking for a walk that might be less mud than usual. Worked out perfect. Only negative (not your fault!) was the litter especially going through Tunstall. Shame the human race cannot look after what we have got. Thanks again Eric Davies (Fellow contributor)
