Wetton - Back of Ecton - Warslow - Butterton - Grindon - Wetton

A demanding walk, mostly along field-paths and tracks, though some short sections of road-walking are required. The route follows a wide, circular course.

Much of the route is either a climb or descent, some quite steep, with only short sections of any kind of level walking. All stiles were present when walked, with only one which had become overgrown by bushes. A bit of emergency pruning was needed to expose the stile again, though other walkers had used a section of broken wall to cross into the next field; hopefully they hadn't broken it down themselves.

There is much of interest around the route, which offers several areas with good views of the surrounding countryside, including one of the most dramatic panoramic views available in this area.

The Black Lion in Butterton (now closed weekday lunchtimes; only lunchtime opening 12-2pm Saturday and from 12 noon on Sunday. This is not one of the most welcoming of pubs for walkers. The landlord will not tolerate customers eating their own food at the bench-tables outside, even if they have bought drinks. There are signs posted for walkers to remove or cover their boots before entering the pub. They offer a good choice of meals at reasonable prices and a choice of interesting beers on hand-pumps.
