Whitby is a fabulous coastal town full of many interesting features. Known for its Whitby Jet, there are many small jewellers' shops to be found within the streets of the old town. Jet is formed from the fossilised remains of trees which have been dated to the Jurassic period and can only be found along the stretch of Whitby's coastline.

Whitby is also known for its links to Dracula, written by Bram Stoker (http://www.literature.org/authors/stoker-bram/dracula).

In addition to St Mary's Church there is also the dramatic Whitby Abbey (http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/whitbyabbey) which is worth a visit, should you have time during the walk.

The streets of the old town are worth exploring further than this walk details and are particularly nice in the evening.

This walk commences in the centre of Whitby and leads you through some of the old town to the steps which lead upto St Mary's Church and the old abbey. Heading south, the walk continues along the coastal path to Saltwick Bay, with dramatic views from the clifftop. The walk concludes by returning to Whitby via a circular route.

Great walk to get your bearings of Whitby and was beautiful on a clear, wintry day. Not very muddy at all as most of the route is on paths. Would definitely recommend.

The views from the top of the cliffs are excellent if a bit hairy! Choose a still day if possible!
