The walk starts from a picnic area clearly shown on the OS maps at NT 666633 beside Whiteadder River (where you may just decide to remain on a very hot day!) then climbs the modest Spartleton, giving superb views in every direction, but especially across the Forth to Fife and beyond. Gamelshiel Castle of 14th or 15th Century is now but a small ruin. Passing along the south side of Whiteadder Reservoir, there are fine views of the start of the walk and the hills just climbed. Waterfowl and migrating geese are often here.
