Field-paths, quiet roads, riverside paths, woods and lanes is the composition of this diverse walk in the rolling hills just to the north-east of Consett. The whole of the walk lies on the north side of the Northumberland / Durham County border. Starting from the lofty village of Whittonstall the walk descends the valley of the River Derwent, where it levels off before climbing through a series of picturesque woods back to the start.

The village of Whittonstall sits high on a ridge between the valleys of the River Tyne to the north and the River Derwent to the south. From the village the walk starts a very gradual descent through fields to intersect a long straight road that drops more steeply down to the River Derwent at Shotley Bridge. Very pleasant riverside- and field-walking follows, together with a visit through three small pleasant woods before arriving at the hamlet of Newlands. A short road-walk returns you down to the River Derwent, after which come a long section of walking through delightful woods as the route climbs up from the river. The final part of the walk involves field-paths and a stony lane for the return to Whittonstall.
