Whitworth Country Park - Byers Green - Todhills - Jubilee Meadows Park - Page Bank - Whitworth Country Park

A nice easy family walk that starts from Whitworth Country Park and passes through a couple of former pit villages to intersect and cross the River Wear. The return leg follows the river downstream on a pleasant riverside path that on the way visits a popular picnic spot.

From Whitworth Country Park the walk passes through the churchyard of the lovely old parish church of Whitworth. The route then tracks a pleasant, hedge-enclosed lane all the way to Byers Green before taking to the roads (on pavements) as the walk passes through first Byers Green and then Newfield, where the walk descends to cross a footbridge over the River Wear and intersect the Weardale Way. From here the walk hugs the river closely as it passes through a riverside picnic area on its long, flat route to emerge at the former mining village of Page Bank. The final short leg recrosses the river and rises steeply to return to the ancient Whitworth Hall, the ancestral home of the famous 'Bonny' Bobby Shafto.
