This walk was originally contributed by Michael Vingoe. Walkingworld is very grateful to Stephen Harris for taking over the upkeep, July 2021.
This walk begins in Whyteleafe, which is served by two stations, Whyteleafe and Upper Warlingham, each within 400 metres of the start of the walk. A brief climb takes you above the suburban hubbub and onto the breezy open Downs, with views across London to the north and across the valley to the surrounding Surrey Hills to south and west. A lovely walk at any time of year, this walk is wonderful in Spring and Summer. Skylarks sing high above, while butterflies and grasshoppers inhabit the waist-high grasses, sensitively managed by the local councils and the City of London. Botanists will love the orchids and the locally common but nationally rare yellow-rattle amongst a host of downland plants.
