Wickwar is a large village or small town well-known for its brewery, the Wickwar Brewing Company, which has been brewing real ales since 1990. Brewing was a tradition in the village long before this, starting back in the 18th Century. Prior to this, Wickwar prospered through the woollen industry.

From Wickwar the walk heads across fields and through the small village of Talbots End into the Tortworth Estate. This is a huge estate of farmland and woodland centred around a Victorian mansion, which is now a hotel. Parts of the estate are now enclosed within the grounds of the hotel and Leyhill Prison, but there are still parts of the estate open to the public, including an arboretum, which are explored on this walk.

The walk can be combined with a visit to Tortworth Lake, closed to the public, but access is allowed on the first Sunday of every month from February to October.
