This easy-to-follow walk closely follows the north bank of the River Wear upstream from the Old Sunderland Bridge to just south of Willington. After crossing the river the circular route is then continued by leaving the river and connecting a series of villages and hamlets along lanes and roads and through fields and woods, through the more undulating countryside to the south of the river.
The walk starts from the large car park and picnic area at the north end of the Jubilee Bridge just to the south of Willington. Riverside walking then follows before the route crosses the River Wear and ascends a lane to intersect the village of Newfield. A little road-walking follows, albeit it on pavements as the route passes through the hamlet of Todhills and the village of Byers Green. Field- and then wood- and lane-walking delivers you back down to the valley bottom to cross the ancient Sunderland Bridge and start the long ramble as the route follows the Wear upstream to pass through the former mining village of Page Bank before arriving back to Jubilee Bridge.
