Riverside paths, old railway paths, enclosed lanes and fields are the principal constituents of this very nice walk in central Durham. The route also passes through the ancient Auckland Park with a visit to the Bishops Castle and Deer House.
The walk starts with pleasant riverside walking along a section of the Weardale Way long-distance footpath followed by a length of railway path, to arrive at the market town of Bishop Auckland. The route then passes through Auckland Park, visiting both the Auckland Castle and the castellated Deer House. From the park the walk intersects and passes along another railway path that leads to a long section of lane-walking along a picturesque enclosed lane before arriving at the hamlet of Whitworth. A short piece of road-walking takes you down to the former pit village of Page Bank, where the route once again picks up the Weardale Way for a pleasant riverside walk back to Willington.
