A beautifully landscaped public parkland linear return walk alongside the enchanting river Bollin on broad hard and smooth paths; known as The Carrs this is the most delightful and popular walk in the town. Starting from an excellent parish hall car park, where an ice cream van is normally parked, there are a few wide wooden kissing gates and latched gates, but no stiles. Foot bridges are all sturdy and wide, and the route is quite flat and easy walking. The latter half of the walk has some slopes, and the path is rougher and more uneven. The first half particularly suitable for wheelchairs which can be used without assistance, but if you do have assistance, you will be able to navigate the whole of this walk. The second half is through National Trust woodland and at the far end is the National Trust Quarry Bank Mill where there is free access to the grounds and gardens, but except for the restaurant snack bar and toilets you will need a ticket to enter and explore the mill buildings. On your return you can opt for an alternative route for the final quarter of the walk which takes you over a meadow and playing fields on your return. Instructions for this are also included in the directions below, note that there is a small charge for using the car park. This is a longer version of walk 8383.

This walk is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between, it is also excellent for dogs and buggies, and good for wheelchairs. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled and there will be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. In addition to the ice cream van the parish hall is alongside the car park where they serve meals at lunchtime if the menu board is on display by the access gate to the walk, and there is also a nearby children’s playground on the opposite side of the car park. Also, alongside the car park is a 20p toilets block and there are free toilets in the parish hall suitable for anyone disabled. There and numerous bench seats and picnic tables along the route, and an additional free car park in the middle of the walk and another large but more expensive car park at Quarry Bank Mill at the far end of the walk.

7/12/2020 - Simon Worrall

Walked July 2020. NOTE - this is essentially a linear walk from and back to Wilmslow (mainly) along the same route. Nice riverbank stroll from the park through to Quarry Bank Mill (currently partially closed due to COVID-19). The walk can be extended by strolling around Styal village and the woods around the mill.
