This walk is mainly about the towpath and adjacent canal scenery and green corridor, and of course the passing boats. This forms two thirds of the route round Northwich and the remaining third is town walking, finishing with countryside and the local flashes - or lakes. It's a walk more for the canal enthusiast and those who hate hills as the route is quite flat and the biggest slope on this circular walk is the railway bridge, so not much more than a gentle stroll. Most of the paths are quite wide and there are no stiles, gates or narrow bridges. The towpath is mainly grass and likely to be soft and in places muddy after heavy rain or in winter and as you leave it the route takes you through a small park with two children's playgrounds. As there are no spectacular views this walk best done in summer in fine weather and the walk includes instructions for canal boat users.
The walk is suitable for children, senior citizens and anyone in-between. Excellent for dogs and okay for buggies, and a possibility for the adventurous wheelchair user who has a few assistants. Suitable footwear will be anything flat soled and there should be no problems for anyone wearing shorts. On your route there are refreshments at several pubs in town, where you will also pass a variety of small shops. There are bench seats in the park; and toilets, food, and refreshments at the pub where you start and finish. Details are below and if you book in advance, you should be able to get a good meal with your pint; an excellent finish to a good walk.
