The path leads through fields of grass which are wet all year, so good footwear is needed. I have seen a field of bluebells near Waymark 4 and the woodland is preserved for its wildlife value. I like the contrast between the woods in the valley and the open views from the ridge. On a clear day it is possible to see Bosley Cloud, Jodrell Bank telescope, the Beeston Hills, the Welsh Hills, Shutlingsloe and The Roaches from the high ground. There are often hunting birds visible, flying above the ridge. The route coming down off the high ground includes some paths which are not shown on my maps. They are a permanent diversion of the paths around Butterlands Farm.

Delightful walk, full of variety.

An excellent walk but I made it a mile longer than the 4.3 miles stated (5.3 miles more or less). It took 3 hours 20 minutes at a fairly leisurely pace with a stop to admire the view. Conditions under foot were frosty, which was a good job too!

April 2012 when we did this walk was one of the wettest on record but not too bad underfoot except section 6 down one side of the valley to the stream (good picnic spot) and again very boggy at the gate at point 12. Great views from the ridge and a most enjoyable walk.
