Starting from the tiny community of Winkhill there is quite a steep climb, which soon affords wonderful views over a wide spread of Staffordshire moorland. Waterfall is another small setting, but boasts a parish church. A steep climb follows the descent into the Manifold Valley, with the stunning rise of hills all around. The River Hamp runs along the valley bottom but disappears beneath the porous limestone. Waterhouses is a busy village, with two cycle hire centres and the Brown End Geological Nature Reserve. There are two large pubs on the road running through the village, a general stores and a fish and chip shop and cafe with a take-away sandwiches facilitiy. The rest of the route follows tracks, field-paths and narrow roads, finally to retrace steps on the last section to Winkwell.
