The Finn Valley Walk, following the River Finn from Witnesham to Woodbridge, must be one of the most beautiful named and promoted walks in Suffolk. This walk follows it for the first three miles. The route sometimes runs close beside the river and sometimes a few hundred yards away, but parallel. This stretch is almost entirely through meadows and woodland; sometimes the path seems almost to be tunnelling through bushes and shrubs, but always with the path surface clear and easy to walk. We then turn northwards, away from the FVW, again through meadow and woodland, but also through some arable fields. Finally, from near Grundisburgh, we go westwards back to Witnesham. This stretch starts with a notice saying 'Beware of the Bull', but have no fear, I have done the walk twice and the bull, with many cows, took no notice of me at all. I have also seen a number of other walkers (with dogs and presumably local) on this stretch. It is also clear from wear on the path that it is well-used.
The Fountain at Tuddenham St Mary (01473-785377) is open Mon-Sat 12-3 and 6-11 (food 12-2 and 6-9). On Sundays it is open 12-4 (food 12-3) and closed in the evening. They provide full and bar-meals and serve Adnams Ales. They have a heated and covered patio area.
This walk is one of three linked walks. The ID numbers of the walks are 4816, 4829 and 4834. Each walk is circular and includes a stretch of the delightful Fynn Valley Walk. If you do all the walks in ascending numerical order, as shown above, you will in the process have completed the whole of the FVW.
