Starting from the conveniently situated car park looking out onto the beautiful and historic Port Meadow, with the spires of Oxford in the distance, this walk follows the River Thames, with its lovely surrounds, to visit the city of Oxford. Usually very difficult to drive into, this access, on foot, is an ideal way of seeing the many colleges and historic sites of interest, but for this walk, we visit just a small part of it before joining the canal towpath at Hythe Road Bridge. Just over to the right is New College, which occupies the site that was once Oxford Wharf, where working boats brought coal to be unloaded there.

The return journey from the city centre along the canal towpath is amazingly countrified, peaceful and quiet, enjoyed by many folk pursuing healthy exercise in pleasant surroundings. The whole route is interesting, with changing scenes and much wildlife to gaze upon and wonder at. At Wolvercote Lock, the route leaves the canal to return to the large and attractive village, which draws many visitors throughout the year.
