The route starts at Wombwell rail station, passes through the edge of the town and through a park and play area, passing a private golf course, to reach the disused Elsecar (Dearne and Dove) Canal. This was used by the Wentworth family estate to transport coal, iron products and machinery to their industrial hub at Elsecar Workshops, now the Heritage Centre, with play area, café, pub, shops and steam trains. From the centre the route finishes uphill through the village to the rail station.
