Woolaston lies just north of Chepstow, sandwiched between the Severn Estuary and Wye Valley. This gives the walk two contrasting flavours, as it heads through these two very different valleys. The walk begins by heading towards the Wye Valley. The river itself is not seen, but the walk climbs up the hills surrounding the river, through a maze of woodland and grassy fields which are typical of this area.
One of the highlights of the walk is Poor's Allotment, a nature reserve made up of heathland, bracken and gorse - a great place for butterflies, birds and small mammals; and if you are lucky, you may see a lizard basking on the rocks.
The walk returns closer to the other great river in the area, the Severn. There are great views down to the estuary, as you descend the slopes making up the Wye Valley, then the walk back to Wollaston is much more gentle and flat.
