Stage 1 of the Yorkshire Wolds Way starts beneath the impressive span of the awe-inspiring engineering feat that is the Humber Bridge. The first half of the walk runs along the shore of the Humber Estuary - a nice, easy start for those setting out on the whole of the trail. When we reach North Ferriby, however, we head inland and a gradual climb up to the very pretty little village of Welton. Looking to all the world as if it has been uprooted from the Cotswolds, Welton provides us with a perfect lunch stop in the form of the Green Dragon Inn. The Green Dragon's claim to fame is that it was here that the notorious highwayman, Dick Turpin, was arrested, before being taken to York, tried, and hung.

From Welton, we climb further onto the Wolds escarpment, before dropping back to skirt the village of Brantingham, passing Brantingham church nestling alone in a beautiful wooded valley. It's then a steep climb back up to the escarpment, and a gradual descent to South Cave, and the end of this stage.

Dog walkers, please note that there are a few dog-unfriendly stiles en route, and areas where livestock may be present. There is also a large footbridge over the (very loud and very busy) A63 with several flights of open steps.

The footpath mentioned in Waymark 12 can be tricky in muddy conditions. Best to stick to the lane.

Please note that the section near the A63 has been diverted due to major road works, which will last into 2006. The diversion was well signposted when I visited in August 2005.
