Youlgreave - Bradford Dale - Robin Hood's Stride - Winster - Elton - Youlgreave
A quite demanding walk with several contrasts, including easy valley paths and quite steep climbs.
The route mostly follows field-paths and tracks, with only short sections of road-walking. There is much of interest around the route, with the path traversing the bank of an Iron Age hill-fort at Castle Ring, though there are only a few sections of dyke and bank remaining. There are a few areas with standing stones in the fields around this area.
Most of the paths are waymarked, though not all, but most are easy to find and there are few areas for confusion. All stiles were present when walked and mostly in good order; some gap-stiles had been replaced with gated stiles, which seem the popular choice with local authority footpaths maintenance.
The pub used on this walk is the Old Bowling Green in Winster. This pub was once noted for turning away walkers. There has been a change of heart - and possibly owners - since then and walkers are now welcomed. Extend them the usual courtesy of covering or removing muddy boots to protect their carpets. There is a reasonable choice on the menu with the set roast dinner being good value. When walked they did not offer a salad other than a garnish with their sandwiches, though they did produce a meat salad on request. They offer an adequate choice of beers with an interesting guest beer when walked. Outside there are a few bench tables on the paved area in front of the pub, intended for food purchased at the pub, though there were no signs displayed.
