The first thing to catch your eye when stepping onto the platform at Wallsend will be the building that houses the Roman Age exhibition. The building bears a resemblance to a centurion's headgear although I'm told it is a copy of a ship's bridge. It stands outside the entrance to Swan Hunter's shipyard. The path follows the route of the old riverside rail line. This was closed down when the metro system was opened. It is also part of the coast to coast cycle route, so keep a lookout for the two-wheeled walkers. The walk follows the twists and turns of the river with superb views of the shipyards. We were lucky to watch a seal in the river, catching fish and enjoying the winter weather, when we followed the lower route.
