Starting in the centre of Linlithgow and walking round the palace, you will see Linlithgow Loch, usually busy with fishermen. The walk uses quiet roads and then climbs by an edge of field-path to reach a golf course. Walking along the edge of the course, you then cross into a field in pasture before reaching Bo'ness. Here you walk through a community wood, then pass the Bridgeness Slab. This is a facsimile of a Roman mural depicting the Antonine Wall. You then reach the shoreline of the Forth Estuary and pass through one small wood to reach the former harbour and the preserved railway.
When the railway is running, you can travel to Birkhill on a single ticket and recommence the walk with some of the climbing done by train. The remainder of the walk is along quiet roads and another section of the Linlithgow Lochside Path.
